You open a Goldfield district sheet to answer one plain question and you get the answer at once. This ground in Esmeralda County held enough gold to build a town of about 20,000 people in four years and then empty it almost as fast. Read the claims, the mills, the water line, and the town blocks together and you see how a Nevada boomtown worked.

Gold was found here in 1902, the year given for the founding of the town. The community took its name from deposits of gold near the original town site. Goldfield is now an unincorporated town and census-designated place, and the county seat of Esmeralda County. It stands along U.S. Route 95, 247 miles southeast of Carson City, at 5,686 feet, with 1.48 square miles of land and ZIP code 89013. At the 2020 census it counted 225 people, down from 440 in 2000. Gold exploration continues in and around the town today.

Where do you place Goldfield on a Nevada sheet?

Start with position, not with gold. Find Tonopah first, then move 27 miles south. That short gap explains much of the map. Mining at Tonopah took off first, and capital and labor moved south when Goldfield opened. The district sits in the Tonopah Basin, far from a large river or a coastal supply point, so every road and track on the sheet matters. U.S. Route 95 is the modern spine through the town, and the older wagon and rail approaches follow the same open ground. Use the neat line and the township grid to keep scale honest. The settled area is small on paper and was small on the ground even at the peak. The built town never covered the whole mineralized ground. Claims spread beyond the streets, and mills and reduction works sit apart from houses. That separation is normal on a mining district map and you should expect it here.

What does the production block tell you?

Look for the figures printed in the margin or added to the legend, because Goldfield was measured in dollars and tons from the start. By 1904 the district produced about 800 tons of ore, valued at $2,300,000, or 30 percent of the state production that year. Between 1903 and 1940 the mines of Goldfield produced more than $86 million at then-current prices. Mining in Belmont and Goldfield together grew from $2.8 million to $48.6 million between 1903 and 1918. The gold output in 1907 was over $8.4 million, the year the town became the county seat. In 1908 output was about $4,880,000. By 1912 ore production had dropped to $5 million.

You can read a boom and a fade in those five numbers without any extra story. They also explain why the town grew so fast and why large reduction works were built beside the mines. A district that could carry 30 percent of a state total in one year needed stamps, power, water, and haulage on the same sheet as the shafts.

How did 20,000 people arrive and leave so fast?

The population figures on a district map are often out of date before the ink is dry, and Goldfield proves the point. The town reached a peak of around 20,000 people in 1906 and was described at the time as the largest town in the state. It briefly became the largest city in Nevada. It also hosted a lightweight boxing championship match between Joe Gans and Oscar Battling Nelson. By the 1910 census the population had fallen to 4,838. Later counts record 1,558 in 1920, 692 in 1930, 554 in 1940, 336 in 1950, 184 in 1960, 655 in 1990, 440 in 2000, 268 in 2010, and 225 in 2020.

When you see a dense street grid with many empty lots on a later edition, you are seeing that table in drawn form. One problem noted is the rising cost of pumping brine out of the diggings, which made them uneconomic. The largest mining company left town in 1919. Do not read the empty blocks as missing data. They are the data.

Why do mills and water matter more than shafts?

New readers look for shafts. Experienced readers look for water and mills. In the early 1900s, Consolidated Mining dug an adit at Alkali to deliver water 10 miles to the 100-stamp Combination Mill near Goldfield. The town also held large reduction works beside the mines. Those two facts belong at the center of any reading, and the detailed Goldfield town history on Wikipedia places them in the same boom years as the high output figures. Without that water line and that mill capacity, the ore tonnage for 1904 and 1907 could not have been treated.

Follow the water line across the sheet with your finger. Note where it crosses claims, where it avoids town lots, and where the mill sits on flat ground with room for tailings and dumps. Then look for the county buildings. The Esmeralda County Courthouse marks the year Goldfield became the county seat. A mining camp has shafts. A county seat has a courthouse, a hotel, a schoolhouse, and a communications building.

Who owned the ground you are looking at?

Ownership names crowd a district map, and two names will help you keep Goldfield straight. George Wingfield built the Goldfield Hotel. With his partner George S. Nixon, who became a U.S. senator in 1904, he had started in Belmont in 1901 and saw the promise of Goldfield after Tonopah developed. Nixon and Wingfield formed the Goldfield Consolidated Mining Company, and by 1906 they were worth $30 million. Wingfield later moved to Reno.

An earlier promoter shows the risk behind those names. George Graham Rice, described as a former check forger, newspaperman, and racetrack tipster turned mining stock promoter, saw his Sullivan Trust Company and its associated mining stocks collapse, which caused the failure of the Goldfield State Bank in 1907. Rice then left Goldfield. Wyatt and Virgil Earp also came to Goldfield in 1904. Virgil was hired as a Goldfield deputy sheriff in January 1905, fell ill with pneumonia in April, and died on October 19, 1905, after six months of illness. Wyatt left Goldfield shortly afterward. When names change quickly between editions, check the date in the title block before you draw any line from one claim to the next.

Why does the labor winter of 1906 to 1908 belong on the map?

A district sheet shows ground. It does not show who could work it, yet that control decided output. Soon after large-scale mining began, miners organized as a local branch of the Western Federation of Miners. Strikes for higher wages came in December 1906 and January 1907. In March and April 1907, the owners refused to discharge carpenters who belonged to the American Federation of Labor but not to the Western Federation of Miners, which was affiliated with the Industrial Workers of the World. The strike that followed forced the IWW out of Goldfield.

Beginning in August 1907, some mines required miners to change clothing before entering and after leaving the mines, a rule the operators tied to theft of valuable ore worth as much as $20 a pound in a practice known as high-grading. In November and December 1907, some owners moved to payment in cashier checks. At the insistence of the owners, Governor Sparks asked President Theodore Roosevelt for federal troops in December 1907. Roosevelt ordered General Frederick Funston to proceed with 300 troops. They arrived on December 6, and the owners then cut wages and barred members of the Western Federation of Miners, and the troops stayed until March 7, 1908, after the state organized a police force. The dispute was won by the owners. If your sheet is dated 1907 or 1908, read idle shafts and new fences with that calendar beside you.

What survived the 1923 fire to anchor a visit?

Much of the town was destroyed by fire in 1923, although several buildings survived and remain today, notably the Goldfield Hotel, the Consolidated Mines Building, which served as the communications center of the town until 1963, and the schoolhouse. The fire was caused by a moonshine-still explosion and burned most of the flammable buildings. Brick and stone buildings from before the fire remain, including the hotel and the high school. The present Goldfield Historic District covers 200 acres, roughly bounded by 5th Street and Miner, Spring, Crystal, and Elliott avenues. It holds nearly 120 buildings, most dating from the first boom from 1904 to 1909. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 14, 1982. Named survivors include the Goldfield High School from 1906 to 1908, the Esmeralda County Courthouse, the Goldfield Hotel from 1907 to 1908 at Crook Avenue and Columbia Street, unoccupied since the end of World War II, and the Southern Nevada Consolidated Telephone Telegraph Company Building. Unoccupied does not mean abandoned. Each building has an owner, many with plans to renovate. The Goldfield Days festival is held in August each year, with parades, booths, historical displays, and a land auction.

How do you read a boomtown district without overreading it?

Keep three checks on the table as you work. First, match every dense town block to a census year, not to a story. Second, match every mill to a water line and a haulage route, not to a shaft alone. Third, match every ownership name to the edition date, because companies and claims in Goldfield changed hands fast. The page gives area, elevation, routes, outputs, populations, buildings, and district bounds, and those are enough to test what you think you see.

Take the 1904 tonnage, the 1907 and 1908 outputs, and the 1910 and 1920 populations, plot them on a timeline beside your map, and mark the 1923 fire and the 1982 listing at the end of the line.
